NEW INITIATIVES FOR BBC COLLEGE OF COMEDY

The BBC College of Comedy today announced two exciting new initiatives for 2010. All Mixed-Up is a sitcom writing competition where writers will be asked to submit proposals which reflect multi-cultural Britain. The second initiative will be in collaboration with CBeebies In-house Production to develop a writing workshop which explores the creation of new comedy for viewers aged four to six.

Writers who are interested in All Mixed-Up, and can demonstrate some professional achievement are requested to submit the first ten pages of a script, with a limit of six characters and three settings.

The best six scripts will be workshopped in preparation for a showcase with a professional cast at the Soho Theatre on 4 December, where a celebrity panel will choose the best two for further development by BBC Comedy. Both scripts will be optioned, with the winner’s option worth £1000, and the runner-up £500.

The competition is being run in association with Triforce Promotions, which promotes talent across a multi-cultural network of people in the media industries.

The aim is to encourage work by diverse voices, and to provide promising writers with an opportunity to develop their professional skills.

Writers of the next best six scripts will be invited to attend workshops on 4 December, and to join the showcase audience.

Micheál Jacob, college creative head, said: “We hope the competition will attract entries from writers who may feel their lives are not currently reflected in television comedy, and will introduce us to funny and fresh new voices.”

The second initiative will see the college and CBeebies run a four-day workshop to explore the creation of a new comedy for viewers aged from four to six. Invited writers will be given an insight into the CBeebies audience, hear case studies on hit shows for the channel including Gigglebiz and Grandpa in My Pocket, and work together to develop ideas for a live action programme.

The workshop will be held in Newcastle in November.

“Watching CBeebies is fun,” Micheál Jacob says. “They have some excellent shows, and I’m very excited to be exploring whether the College can add to them.”

Information on how to enter All Mixed-Up will be available from the 31 August at http://www.bbc.co.uk/writersroom.

Talent Boost

Talent Boost is an incredible project that aims to expand casting options and provide creative opportunities for participants from communities across the UK that are currently underrepresented in the broadcasting industry.

Talent Boost 2010 is run in association with Graeae and supported by the BBC.

This year Talent Boost will train a cohort of 20 disabled and non-disabled actors alongside each other in London and Leeds. Our aim is to profile actors with physical and sensory impairments, and actors from minority communities, specifically South Asian, East Asian, Eastern European, Middle Eastern, Black British and Mixed Race. We will equip these actors with well-developed skills as on-screen performers and redress in some measure the imbalance in disabled and minority representation across the industry.

Actors will have the opportunity to work with established writers and directors on a short film which they will then have for their showreel.

Further information about the project and applications forms can be downloaded here

Business of Culture

The Africa Centre, as you will already know, is a focal point for Africa in London highlighting all forms of cultural and social activities related to Africa. These include meetings, lectures, visual arts exhibitions, cinema, literature, and the performing arts. It has a distinguished history of hosting an array of eminent African politicians, academics and artists.

We’re currently raising funds to run a project which will explore the trajectory of Black/African musical heritage in Britain from the 1950s (Highlife) through to the present (Hiphop), taking the Africa Centre as a central feature and producing an oral history documenting the role the Africa Centre has played in promoting and preserving African music. We will also encourage a cross-generational dialogue around music, including the influence of one generation’s music on another, and the socio-political contexts from which the music sprung.

The project entails collecting, organising and exhibiting material related to music from the Africa Centre archives, as well as interviewing people who performed, organised and attended musical events at the Africa Centre. We also hope to facilitate workshops for young people that emphasise the importance of African and Caribbean music in the lives of Black British people, and the lasting legacy of this music throughout the UK. As part of the project, we hope to recruit and train young volunteers from inner London boroughs in the areas of archiving, curating and oral history. The workshops will target youth groups aged 11-17 in Westminster and surrounding areas. These young people will have the opportunity to contribute to a large scale exhibition of the Africa Centre’s musical archives and a unique showcase event which will attract a wide and diverse audience from London and beyond.

Charismatic Theologians or Religious Practitioners

BBC searches for charismatic Theologians or religious practitioners who could be interested in working with us in an ‘on screen’ presenting role for our new programmes in 2010/2011.

I am currently working in Development for Religion and Ethics for the BBC, where we make fantastic factual series like Around the World in 80 Faiths, Did God Kill Darwin? Missing Presumed Married, Extreme Pilgrim, A History of Christianity and Gandhi.

I am hoping to find a person who is able to express their ideas clearly and who is comfortable explaining complicated concepts in a straightforward manner. Someone who can engage with interviewees, who is able to understand and appreciate different and potentially opposing perspectives on issues, who is able to empathise and where necessary challenge.

We would welcome interest from people of all religions and from all parts of the community, we’re looking for a person of faith, who has an engaging personality and an inquiring mind and who is willing to embrace new challenges.

I'd be very grateful if people who are interested could send me a covering letter by email, a current photograph and a link if there is video content available of them speaking on the web.

Online course on how to trace your Caribbean family history – taught by Guy Grannum

Caribbean Family History

Britain’s first colony in the West Indies was settled in 1625. Over the next three centuries hundreds of thousands went out to the Caribbean as merchants, traders, soldiers, sailors, labourers, transported traitors and felons. The slave trade brought many times that many to the region. If your genealogical research has turned up a connection to one of Britain’s colonies in the Caribbean this course is your opportunity to expand your family history. You will learn about vital records, passenger lists, immigration sources and records of the slave trade. You will be able to make use of sources on the Web and learn about resources accessible in archives and libraries. For anyone with Caribbean connections this course will set your research on solid foundations.

Instructor: Guy Grannum

* Caribbean Research: Essential Facts, Useful Background
* Web Resources, Archives and Libraries
* Records of Birth, Marriage and Death
* Migration and Settlement
* Sources for Researching Enslaved People and Slave Holders

Each lesson includes exercises and activities; a minimum of 1 one-hour chat session per week. See How the Courses Work.

The course description is here | Our website is www.pharostutors.com

The Council of Ethnic Minority
Voluntary Sector Organisations

The Council of Ethnic Minority Voluntary Sector Organisations (CEMVO)is organising London's History of Comedy in which the history of London will be told through the stories and performances of 3 Black or Minority Ethnic comedians who have settled in London.

The project will include a seminar in which young volunteers interview the comedians, the production of a documentary DVD based on the interviews, and a performance in which the documentary will be shown and the comedians will have an opportunity to share their experiences
and perform.

I was wondering if you might know of any comedians who might be interested in this opportunity to perform, tell their story and appear on a documentary DVD? Or perhaps you might know of some groups of young people with an interest in media studies, black history or
theatre who would like to get involved in the interviewing the comedians?

BT GETS COMMUNITIES ONLINE IN LONDON

Award scheme gives community groups in the region the chance to move into the digital world

btBT has launched a new round of its BT Community Connections (BTCC) award scheme to help people get online in London.

Community and charitable groups in the region are being invited to apply for BTCC Awards, which include a laptop and a year’s broadband internet connection. Groups can also apply together for a BTCC Cluster Award to each receive additional packages of IT equipment.

Whilst the internet has become a crucial aspect of daily life for the majority*, many people are still missing out on the opportunities to email, network, find training, secure a job and access vital services provided by the web. About a third of all people in the country are considered to be ‘digitally excluded’.

BT believes that enhanced communications help create a fairer, more inclusive society where everybody has the opportunity to participate, benefit and contribute. The award scheme enables groups already working within communities to get online and experience the benefits of the internet, helping them to build capacity and encourage their members to support each other in their own digital journeys.

To apply simply log on to www.btcommunityconnections.com or write to PO Box 6919, London W1A 8UX to request an application form.

Beth Courtier, head of BT’s charity programme, said: “BT Community Connections remains a key element of our strategy to help people take full advantage of the huge benefits offered by the internet. In today’s digital world, exclusion from the internet has become a key facet of social exclusion. We are very proud to be at the forefront of empowering local communities, by providing these highly successful awards across the whole of the UK.

“We are constantly learning, refining and enhancing the scheme and are delighted to announce the addition of the new cluster awards. These are to encourage further networking and knowledge transfer within the voluntary sector.”

The Kick It Out Development Grants

The Kick It Out Development Grants have been designed to help community groups, grassroots and amateur clubs ‘kick-start’ activities for groups that are still under-represented in mainstream football.

Through support from the Football Foundation, Kick It Out is able to offer a number of grants of up to £2,000 each.

The aims of the grants programme include helping to increase participation from BME communities in all areas of the game (including playing, coaching and refereeing), using football to create more inclusive communities and helping grassroots and amateur teams develop closer links with mainstream football including local County FA’s.

Priority areas of activity

Kick It Out has introduced a number of priority areas of activity for applications for a Kick It Out Development Grant. Whilst we will still consider projects that do not fall under any of the headings, projects that fit one or more of the criteria are more likely to receive funding.

  • Increasing participation of BME communities, especia
    lly women and girls
  • Working with members of new communities especially Eastern European or
involving Gypsy, Roma or Traveller communities
  • Groups working to address issues of racial tension and territorial
    conflict
  • Faith based organisations which want to use sporting activities to
    engage participants

To apply, please fill in the grant application form, and return it via email to [email protected] or by post to Kick It Out, PO Box 29544, London, EC2A 4WR

Various Grants and Funding

The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation
has changed its priorities and application guidelines

The Foundation will now mainly operate proactively through partnerships and initiatives and there will be limited scope for unsolicited applications. The only programme open to unsolicited application is the Innovation Fund, which will support innovative ideas and unusual partnerships across the Foundation’s interest areas of:

· Encouraging understanding between people of different cultures

· Assisting the full participation of all individuals in society especially the vulnerable

· Protecting and caring for the environment

· Supporting exceptional ideas and unusual partnerships between people and organisations that might not otherwise come together

Research and development grants averaging between £10,000 and £25,000 are available for organisations to explore opportunities outside their usual practice or to allow them to research areas for which they would not normally have the resources. Buildings and equipment costs are excluded. Work outside London is prioritised.

These volunteer-produced tours are: accessible online with virtual routes interwoven with compelling historical archive and present day footage; on foot as entertaining and educative walking tours and on film as discursive and illustrative professionally made documentary shorts.

The latest London Behind the Scenes tours include; a docks tour, which tells an alternative tale of trade, dockers and Empire and a Brick Lane tour which examines the positive impact of immigration and changing ideas about 'race'. Wakeham Trust

The Wakeham Trust give small grants (generally up to £750) to small registered charities across the country for a wide range of charitable activities.

Funding themes (areas of interest):
The Trust provides grants to help people rebuild their communities. They are particularly interested in neighbourhood projects, community arts projects, projects involving community service by young people, or projects set up by those who are socially excluded. They also support innovative projects to promote excell
ence in teaching (at any level, from primary schools to universities).

The Trust are especially interested in new ideas and unpopular causes. They do not favour any particular areas of activity. You can read about some of the previous projects funded on the case studies page of the Trust website.

However, the general characteristics of the majority of projects supported by the Trust are as follows:

  • Something new for this particular area - either something innovative in general, or something tried and tested elsewhere being applied to your community.
  • Small - they normally give grants to projects where an initial £75 to £750 can make a real difference to getting the project up and running. They sometimes also help established institutions that are under threat.
  • Does not employ staff - A common theme for all the projects the Trust supports is the empowerment of ordinary non-professional people.
  • Not well established - the Trust helps those projects that are too new and experimental to get support through established fundraising channels, or those that are under threat due to changes in national or local policy.
  • Has the potential to become self-supporting - the Trust likes to see well-planned projects, projects that have already done some fundraising for themselves, and information that shows how the project will support itself in future years.
  • Outward looking and helps a lot of people - the Trust like to support projects that are active in the larger community and make an impact on a significant number of people. They are are especially keen to help groups who are usually considered recipients of voluntary action (for example old age pensioners or young offenders) when these people themselves become involved in helping other groups in the community.

Grant size available: The Trust normally gives grants to projects where an initial £75 to £750 can make a real difference to getting the project up and running. The grants list in the annual report shows the vast majority of grants given are £1,000 and under. There are a few of between £1,000 and £3,500 then the occasional grant of above £10,000.

Types of cost funded: Revenue and capital costs. The Trust will not fund staff salaries or academic research posts.

Types of organisation that can be funded: Registered charities only. Although if you are not a registered charity, you may still be able to get a grant from the Trust if you can find a registered charity in your area willing to hold the grant for you. The Trust prefer small charities with no paid staff.

Geographical areas that can be funded: Mainly UK. Local, regional or national work can be funded. Occasional overseas work can be funded. The list of previous grants given shows a spread across the country so the Trust don't seem to particularly favour particular areas.

How to apply: The Trust prefer online applications: the online application form is on this page. Otherwise, you can print off a form and post it.

Deadline: Apply at any time

Key exclusions (what can’t be funded):

  • Large capital expenditure projects, such as buying minibuses, building, repairing or restoring buildings, or providing sports facilities.
  • Individuals
  • Staff salaries or academic research posts.

PARDNER HAND CALL FOR SUBMISSION

Have you heard of the ‘pardner hand’, which was used by Caribbean (West Indian) migrants to save money? Do you have experience of, or are witness to how it was used and misused? Do you know people who have benefited or lost financially from using the ‘pardner hand’? Are you a Caribbean writer, by birth or descent? Are you interested in capturing stories that captures the impact of the pardner on the lives of Caribbean people, whether at home, or anywhere else Caribbean communities formed?

Pardner Hand is an anthology of short stories, prose and memoirs by Caribbean writers who can answer yes to the above questions. It is an international project created to reflect this very important, but largely hidden, aspect of Caribbean people’s history. Potential contributors are asked to submit short stories, not less than 2,500 words and no more than 6,000 words long. The stories can be set in any time in the post world war II period and must concern central character(s) who are about to receive, have just received, or have just spent their pardner money. Apart from the length of the submissions, the only other requirement is that the most prominent central character(s) are Caribbean.

For example, one of the editors is contributing a tale of a married couple in England, from different Caribbean islands, one of whom wishes to use the pardner money they have just received to return to the Caribbean – the last thing the other wishes to do. When the issue is pressed, the reasons behind the reluctance of the one wishing to stay in England rock the very foundations of their short, but hitherto very close relationship.

There are many potential themes arising from the pardner hand – here are a few examples: how friends and family supported each other financially, the social role of the pardner hand banker, how money bred temptation, jealousy and arguments over how it should be spent. You may have some other themes.

If you are interested in being considered for inclusion, please email submissions to Cyril Husbands at this address: [email protected], as an RTF (rich text format) attachment, by 30 September 2007. Please observe the following requirements: lines should be double-spaced; the font should be Verdana 12-point size and every page should include the title of the piece and the name of the author. Each page should be numbered and all text should be left justified. Failure to observe any of these requirements may delay or prevent inclusion. Any questions should also be emailed to this address.

Michael McMillan is a renowned playwright, academic, author and live artist. His work has been broadcast by the BBC and Channel 4 and staged widely in Britain, the USA and elsewhere. Currently visiting professor of creative writing at the London College of Communication (University of the Arts) and formerly a fellow of the Royal Literary Fund, Michael is one of those rare individuals who combine creative excellence, academic achievement and engaging, accessible art. Among the best examples of this is the hugely successful West Indian Front Room exhibition he conceived and curated, which has proved to be a resounding international hit.

It was Cyril Husbands’ experience of this exhibition that inspired him to conceive the Pardner Hand anthology and invite Michael to co-edit it with him. A storyteller, songwriter, poet and performer, Cyril has performed his work in Britain and abroad in locations as diverse as New York and Banjul, capital of The Gambia, West Africa. An Urban Lynching, his poetic tribute to Amadou Diallo (an innocent young African man, killed by New York police, who shot him 19 times in his own doorway), has been used by New York University as teaching material. His work, including this project, is inspired by his pan-Africanist values

UNHEARD VOICES - Winners Announced

Competition run by Random House Children’s Books, supported by the www.Black- History-Month.co.uk website.

We are delighted to announce that we have chosen the winners for this competition. Malorie and the judges were unable to decide between two poems for the final winning entry, so we have decided to include both in the forthcoming anthology.

Daniel FrancisThe two winners are:

DANIEL FRANCIS (left) for his poem, A Day in the Life, which cleverly compares and contrasts two separate viewpoints of the transportation of slaves.

Grance QuansahAnd GRACE QUANSAH (right), whose moving poem, Visit to Elmina, was inspired by a recent journey, with her children, to Ghana - including a visit to Elmina Castle: an important site in the history of slavery. The poem shows very clearly how the events of the past still have a strong resonance today - and how important it is for everyone to be aware of their personal cultural history.

Daniel Francis was born in St Lucia, and moved to London when he was four. He therefore has first-hand experience of different cultures which is at the heart of his writing. He was inspired to write the poem by images exploring the relationship between slavery and religion, and also drew on the work of Braithwaite and Afrika which he is studying as part of his GCSE in English. He lives in London.

Grace Quansah is of Ghanaian descent. Born and brought up in London, she spent two years in Ghana during her school years, but only really began to discover her ancestral history as a young adult, first through learning about the legacies of slavery via the media, then through books and academic study, and African-centred community groups with an emphasis on Black history. She lives in London.

Random House Children’s Books and Malorie Blackman are delighted to be able to include work from both of these talented new writers in the collection. We hope that both will continue to develop their writing and that we will be able to publish further work from them in the future.

Unheard Voices is an anthology of both stories and poems which all relate to the theme of slavery. Edited by Malorie Blackman and published in March 2007 to tie in with the commemoration of the bicentenary of the 1807 Abolition of the Slave Trade Act, the book includes an original story from Malorie herself, alongside work from the following authors and poets: John Agard, Sandra Agard, James Berry, Valerie Bloom, Alex Haley, Catherine Johnson, Grace Nichols, Gary Paulsen and Benjamin Zephaniah; and extracts from slave narratives from Frederick Douglass, Olaudah Equiano, Harriet Jacobs and Mary Prince.

Making the Journey to Adulthood

A research project into the experiences of young people of Caribbean heritage

My name is Yvonne Foster and I am undertaking research for my PhD with the University of Leicester. I am interested in finding out the range of experiences that young people aged 16-25 have ‘lived’ since leaving school at 16. Through this research I wish to bring to the attention of wider audiences the challenges, successes and failures that young black people have experienced since leaving school.

Areas the research will explore

  • The issues which are of concern to young people as they attempt to create new lifestyles on their journey into adulthood
  • Your career decisions since leaving school; what decisions you have made, why and how these decisions have affected you
  • Family background and relationships
  • Your experiences of school
  • Your experiences of further education, work, unemployment, etc.
  • Your peer relationships

What your involvement in the research would mean
The research will unfold in three stages.
Stage 1: I would like you to complete a detailed ‘life history’ questionnaire. This will give me information about what you did at school, your family and your activities since leaving school.
Stage 2: Your participation in two group discussions with about 10 other young people to share your ideas about your progression.
Stage 3: Participation in individual interviews to explore in more depth your experiences since leaving school, the events which have most shaped where you are now and where you intend to go in the future.

You do not have to participate in all stages of the research. You can withdraw at any stage. I hope that you will find your involvement interesting and worthwhile and that you will want to remain with the research for all the stages.

Confidentiality
No information that anyone gives will be traced back to any individual. All names and places referred to will be changed so that they cannot be recognised.

How long will the research take?
The research started in May 06 and will be completed by March 07. However, the writing up and publication of the research findings will not happen until the end of 2007. Your involvement is required from May 06 to May 07. In total the amount of your time that is required is about 3 days over this period.

Will you be paid?
I am funding the research myself, so I have limited resources and will not be able to pay you what your time is really worth. I will, however, cover your travel costs, if any are incurred, For those who participate in all stages of the research, as a thank you, I will give you £20.00 for your involvement.

What will I do with the materials produced?
The main purpose of this research is to ensure that the experiences of young black people related to their career choices, opportunities and barriers are written about and made known to different audiences. For example, policy makers and agencies who provide support services to young people. The information that I discover will be presented for my PhD degree, but that’s not all. I am fully committed to ensuring that out of this research a number of publication opportunities will be sought to create greater awareness about the post school experience of the young people who will give of their time to make their voices heard.

If you’d like to take part, or know someone who would, call Yvonne Foster on 07974 434 490

The Centre for Caribbean Studies

The Centre for Caribbean Studies, located within the Department of
English & Comparative Literature at Goldsmiths, University of London,
aims to promote interdisciplinary work within Caribbean Studies and to
develop the study of Caribbean literature.

The Centre for Caribbean Studies is offering a relatively new post
graduate course - the 'MA Caribbean Literature and Creole Poetics'. It
is a unique course in the very vibrant field of Caribbean studies. What
sets it apart, certainly in the UK, is that it offers an integrated
literary, critical and linguistic approach to the study of writing
emerging from the Caribbean space and its diaspora. Integral to the
course is the unique opportunity for students to learn a Creole (in
recent years this has been Haitian Creole) and to use the insights
gained from this experience to secure a 'lived' perspective on issues
of language, voicing and representation. The course is now in its third
year and its students have secured significant success, with several
having moved on to PhD study in the field.

Should prospective applicants wish to learn more, our website is
http://www.goldsmiths.ac.uk/caribbean/
Dr Joan Anim- Addo shall, of course, be delighted to discuss the course
with interested students.

As a young course we are always looking for ways to raise our profile
and let potential students know of the option we represent.
