Events
August is a very important time for those of us from the African Diaspora, with several countries celebrating their independence plus 1st August is celebrated since 1834 as African Liberation day. In addition to this the Director General of UNESCO invited the Ministers of Culture of all Member states to organise events every year on that date, involving the entire population of their country and in particular young people , educators, artists and intellectuals.
Then International events for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition was first celebrated in a number of countries, in particular Haiti 23rd August 1998 and Goree in Senegal 23rd August 1999. First celebrations took place in Liverpool attended by the late Bernie Grant MP for Tottenham. The event has grown in significance in Liverpool since the opening of the International slavery Museum in 2007.
Stay tune to our website to see events that have been organised in the key cities of black presence in the UK.
There will be a series of film screenings in the community of a new thought provoking and poignant film SUS set on Election Night 1979 on the event of Margaret Thatcher about to come into power. A young man is held on suspicion of murdering his pregenant wife. Written by Barry Keefe, who was behind the British classic the Long Good Friday. This tense crime drama reminds those of us who lived through the SUS campaign to question what has indeed changed. After every screening there will be a question and answer which in some cases we have supplied from our speakers bureau.
We seem to have a busy month of attending screenings and plays
We had the opportunity to see all 12 of the plays part of the awesome Women Power and Poiltics series which was worth seeing and appreciating the journeys we have made to true independence of sorts. as women in the UK.
We also were part of the Q&A at the event of the Shirley Chisholm film 1972 Unbought and Unbossed by. This film traces the life of Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm. It is the story of the indomitable spirit of this extraordinary woman who long before Obama, dared to campaign to be come a Presidential nominee in 1972.
We also assisted the Amos Bursary and were part of a team of volunteers who successfully celebrated the project year .The Amos Bursary supports the advancement of outstanding young men educated in the UK of Caribbean or African Heritage aged 16 and over. The bursary helps to prepare them for University and to enter corporate professions within British Society. The Bursary raised over £4,000 at its recent raffle drawn in July 2010
Stay tuned for further developments about this scheme.

Goree A novel by Angela Barry published by Peepal Tree Press Ltd. This thought provoking book is very much a story of our times when a chance encounter at Kennedy Airport with her ex husband, Saliou Wade Tadalene and their now adult daughter Hakdi on a visit to see him and his new family in Senegal. A visit to the slave port of Goree opens up many wounds and starts the beginning of healing for all parties concerned in this beautifully constructed story.
