CLR James Legacy Project - can you help

It’s been some months now since we contacted you with an update on the campaign to save the name of the CLR James Library when it is relocated in a new £4.4 million development in Dalston, London. As you are aware through our on-line petition and local campaigning we managed to bring enough pressure to bear on the local Council to back down on their plans to drop the name.

We are now working in partnership with local group Hackney Unites – who campaigned alongside from the outset to retain the name - to ensure that there is a lasting legacy is built in tribute to CLR James and his ideas.

To this end we are planning:

  • A teaching pack/on-line resource aimed at secondary school students. We believe that CLR’s life and work can be made relevant to the next generation. Through a teaching pack that we take into local schools and a web-site that showcases and discusses his work we want to teach what CLR James stood for. We also want to show young people what they can aspire to in terms of standing up for what they believe.
  • Seminar series - we also plan to create a seminar series on CLR James. This would include local meetings with academics and activists discussing themes of his work and also podcasts/webinars on his life. We plan the local seminars to start on a monthly basis starting in July, and lasting until October (when we hope to launch our teaching pack).
  • We are also in regular discussion with the library to ensure that we have input into any exhibition or events that the new library hosts in his name.

If anyone on this list would like to know more, wants to contribute, or has ideas about how to make this project a reality, then we would like you to get in touch by registering your interest here: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/clrJamesLegacyProject
