The Black History Month Website is a must for thoses interested in black history and experience. Black History Month (BHM) is celebrated in the UK in October each year.
It stress quite rightly that black history is also relevant throughout the year.
This month, for example, the site provides links to a series of national events marking the 200th anniversary of the legislation abolishing the slave trade in the former British colonies. Contacts for each event are included.
The homepage is clearly set out with key content pages listed. Examples include campaigns (for example, Make Female Genital Mutilation History) and books. the latter provides a much needed resource for those who want speedier access to literature on black history. It also features a books of the month section that showcases new writing and includes novels and poetry.
My only negative observation is that there is so much information on the site that time is needed to just browse around it. Examples include the origins of BHM in the United States and vignettes on key international black historical figures, including black women such as Mary Seacole.
There is an interesting news/features section that includes tributes to significant black people who have recently died. While the site may be initially overwhelming, it is a great tribute to black history and experience
