Prof. Charles Ssali is dead.
Charles Ssali Lwanga Kabalu, the doctor behind the Mariandina
Clinic for HIV/Aids patients died yesterday, a month after
he was admitted in critical condition at the Uganda Heart
Institute, Mulago. Ssali, had been on life-support system.
Over the weekend, he was unable to recognise close relatives,
including his children who had just arrived from the United
Kingdom. Burial arrangements were not known by yesterday.
"It is rather unfortunate," said Mr Apolo Muhairwa, the National
Drug Authority Executive Director. "There is no doubt he
was the best in ear, nose and throat (ENT) research." Ssali
returned to Uganda from Britain in 1988 to start Aids research.
In
perhaps his last press interview a month ago, Ssali revealed
that he met President Yoweri Museveni two months before.
He
was a bitter man. He wanted to complain about why his Aids
drugs were not licensed. The NDA rejected the drugs saying
they were mere vitamins. Ssali was also bitter that the government
had licensed Anti-retrovirals, which reportedly have side
effects. Museveni reportedly told him to bring him people
he had treated with his drugs. Ssali told The Monitor people
around the President had denied his patients access to Museveni.
Born on September 3, 1930 in Masaka, Ssali had a career
that
spurned three continents and several countries, including
Uganda, Kenya, England and Saudi Arabia. He was Uganda's
first
ENT professor at Mulago.
