Petition for QTS

E Petition That the government makes it a legal requirement that any person supervising, covering and teaching classes in England must hold QTS

The government is proposing to allow non qualified teachers to teach full classes in State schools. Many feel this is going to directly affect many BME (Black Minority Ethnic) children and those from lower socially economic backgrounds because the 'better' schools will never to allow unqualified teachers to teach full classes.

One of the reasons schools are opting to use unqualified teachers over qualified one is the costs. This is impacting teachers' employment. In the academic year ending July 2011, the number of qualified teachers in schools dropped by 10,000, whilst the number of TAs (Teaching Assistants) and HLTA (Higher Level Teaching Assistants) and CSs (Cover Supervisors) rose by 5,000 and 5,000 respectively. Further increases are expected this year.

The scenario could allow unqualified teacher who may not even possess GCSE English and Maths, let alone a degree teaching whole classes.
