Delivering
Inclusion in Science Communication (DISC)
DISC aims to create partnerships with ethnic minorities and
organisations that communicate Science, such as science centres,
science institutions and science festivals.
The purpose of DISC is to enhance the participation and profile
of ethnic minorities in Science communication activities and
science issues.
DISC is a two year (April 2004 - March 2006) national initiative
located in three regions of England, the Northwest, Midlands
and London The project is organised by the African- Caribbean
Network for Science and Technology (ACNST), in partnership
with the British Association of Science (the BA).
An effective national framework will be developed to facilitate
empowering networks and sustainable partnerships between ethnic
minorities and science communicators by engaging both groups
in consultation and dialogue in two stages:
Year 1
DISC will organise separate regional consultation events
for ethnic minorities and science communicators to assess
the needs, interest and barriers that each face when involving
ethnic minorities in science communication activities. The
consultation will be organised in Manchester, Birmingham and
London.
Year 2
The representatives of ethnic minority groups and science
communication groups involved in year one will be brought
together to network, share ideas and challenges, and develop
partnerships that will enable the groups to organise innovative
initiatives. The project will provide resources of 'good practice'
and a database of groups interested in science communication.
Disc is the first initiative of its kind in Britain, and
is funded by Copus and NESTA.
African-Caribbean Network for Science and Technology (ACNST)
The ACNST is a national educational charity set up in 1995
by Black professionals working in various fields of Science,
Engineering and Technology (SET), to advance the educational
achievements and aspirations of Black youths in these fields.
African-Caribbean people are very much under-represented in
SET, due to the inequalities of the educational outcomes in
mainstream education in Britain, and unequal access to role
models and promotional activities in SET.
