Philip Lawrence Awards
As a rule we dont cover Awards unless the sums in question are substantially equivalent to a grant, or there are particular circumstances affecting the Award itself. We are covering the Philip Lawrence Awards this year because a cash sum of £1000 is available to winners, but also because its the tenth year of the Awards that commemorate the head teacher in London who was murdered in 1995 when he went to the aid of one of his pupils. Awards are made to young people between the ages of 11 and 20 throughout the UK who are actively initiating, developing and delivering programmes of work to enhance their lives and the lives of others. This can include projects that relate to people in other countries, and those that promote respect and understanding of faiths, cultures and communities internationally. The Awards are financed by the Governments Home Office.
Awards are judged against five key themes that are presented as ways of promoting citizenship. They are:
- Combating lawlessness and violence;
- Promoting community safety;
- Advancing racial harmony;
- Demonstrating good citizenship;
- Supporting projects through schools.
The more creative or unusual the project the better, but effectiveness is important.
Nomination forms are available in many formats from the Award managers, 4Children, on 020 7512 2100 or by emailing info@4Children.org.uk
