It’s nearly here

BHM no longer weeks away , it is here now we welcome Colchester , Thurrock and Grimsbyt other site . This   promises to be a busy season of activities .  . Be sure to have our site bookmarked www.black-history-month.co.uk  and always let organizers know where you saw their information  first .

Events to look out for as we load them

Bridgetower 1779- 1869   a new jazz opera by Julian Joseph and Mike Phillips (librettist|) co production with English  Touring Opera  look out for special offer. Fabulous production see young rising star and see stunning performance by Cleveland Watkiss   London, Cambridge, Warwick, Truro, Exeter, Malvern, Sheffield , Bexhill and Manchester.

Meet our hero George Bridgetower  the 19th century violinist by the age of 12 had become popular among London’s music loving and  artistic communities.   Get an understanding of what life was  like for our young heroine the slave  Mary Prince,  who published a brave autobiography  - The History of Mary Prince related by herself. This seminal book became a rallying cry for the abolitionist movement throughout the world.

Africa in Motion film festival now in   Bristol, Edinburgh, Cambridge and London fabulous selection of films from the African Continent plus tribute to the master   Sembene Ousmane.

Black Comedy Awards look out for poll on our website…. Know who makes you laugh vote for them  on line with us now , and join us for a fabulous night out  at the  BECA awards organised by  Tharmm Equest  event takes place at the Broadway Theatre Catford  Sunday 11th  November – vote on line now.

Ira Aldridge   the first black man to achieve world renown as a     Shakespearian  actor in 1807- 1867   Our first man of the theatre Bi centenary  production  see the  exhibition, tour and take part in the discussions.

Special theatre opening  offers available on site now Talawa production  Black Gold on until 20th October  over at Soho Theatre, Lyric Theatre Rough Crossings ‘ powerful and moving production tour de force’ Simon shama book adapted by Caryl Phillips. We wish to encourage visitors to look at the information pertaining to the Path Management Development Program (PMD) . Path National is an awards winning national skills development agency whose focus is on enhancing workforce diversity  through training initiatives aimed at  Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic individuals. Path’s works is supported by the London Development Agency  for Sustainable Economic Development – to deliver accredited Level 3, 4 and 5

Wholetime Firefighter Recruitment
South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue will shortly be accepting applications for Wholetime Firefighters.  The recruitment process will commence in early November 2007 and details of awareness sessions on recruitment process and how to apply to become a firefighter will be advertised soon, so keep an eye on the site.

Congratulations

Finally congratulations to all finalist of the Welsh Diversity Awards, we were delighted to be judges for a vibrant and supportive community. It was delightful to see  those collecting awards having the opportunity to give a brief statement and more importantly take photographs with their teams.  To Yvonne Conniki and  her team of the Black Film festival Wales at the Chapter  Centre  fabulous opening  film Zanzibar Soccer Queen directed by  Florence Ayisi

Black History Timeline:
We are currently developing a Black History UK timeline, from 1948 (Windrush) to present in time for 60 anniversary of Windrush 2008 please send your suggestions of the 10 most important events (political, artistic etc) since 1948 (with a brief "why"). Please suggest what we should include in the timeline.
