Michael Manley to be inducted in Walk of Fame |
Ten years after his death, former Prime Minister Michael Manley will become the first Jamaican to be inducted into the International Civil Rights Walk of Fame.
Mr. Manley's induction forms part of the annual Trumpet Awards in the United States, which honours African American achievers in various fields including law, business, entertainment, medicine and the public service.
Chairman of the Michael Manley Foundation, Danny Roberts, says Mr. Manley's induction is a great honour to his memory and his work.
The International Civil Rights Walk of Fame was created five years ago as an added feature of the Trumpet Awards.
It recognises those who have sacrificed and struggled to make equality a reality for all.
Mr. Manley's induction will take place in Atlanta on Saturday January 12.
The former Prime Minister will be inducted alongside American civil rights icons, Maya Angelou, Entertainer Sammy Davis Junior, Martin Luther King's attorney, Clarence B. Jones and talk show host, Tom Joyner.
Mr. Manley served as Prime Minister from 1972 to 1980 and from 1989 to 1992.
A spokesperson for the Trumpet Awards said Mr. Manley was chosen for induction based on his outstanding and enduring legacy in civil rights. |
