October is national Black History Month and so TaCMEP (Tendring and Colchester Minority Ethnic Partnership) and DEEL (Development Education Essex Limited), have partnered with Colchester Arts Centre and Essex University Lakeside Theatre to create Colchester Bicentenary Black History Month - a vibrant and energetic festival of events celebrating African and African Caribbean culture in our community and marking the 200 years anniversary of the parliamentary abolition of the transatlantic slave trade. As Britain remembers its role in the parliamentary abolishment of the slave trade, we acknowledge and celebrate those African men and women who have brought about their own emancipation. Taking place throughout the month are workshops and performances for adults and children in schools and public arts venues across Colchester exploring Black History through theatre, music, visual art, film, stand-up comedy, discussion groups, speakers, dance, and storytelling.
