"We
spoke briefly on the phone a few weeks back when I called
to let you know my
amazing news, that I had won joint first prize in the 'Unheard
Voices'
competition which was judged by Random House Children's Books
in conjunction
with Malorie Blackman. In the midst of being totally sense
overwhelmed, I
rang to acknowledge the fact that had you not forwarded me
the newsletter to
read/circulate onto others I would never have known about
the competition in
the first instance. I thank you for this again. Little did
I know then
that a poem I submitted last minute would have the impact
that it seems to
have had. I have now received a contact from Random
House for the
publication of 'The Awakening of Elmina', which has been
signed and
returned."

"The Black History Month website proved an excellent
resource for us to work with in running a competition on
the Opportunities
pages to find a story or poem from a new writer for a forthcoming
children’s anthology with a black history theme - the
story of the slave trade: Unheard Voices, edited by Malorie
Blackman. As one of the prime sites for those with an interest
in history to access, it was ideal for our purposes. Mia
Morris handled our project smoothly and professionally and
we were very pleased with the end result: rather than one
winner, we ended up with two, both of whom will see their
poetry published for the first time within this anthology.
Thank you, Mia, for helping us to put this competition together
to find these two new voices."
Sue Cook, Senior Editor, Random
House Children’s Books

I have noticed an increase in traffic to our own site.
Another website has contacted me and asked that I list
my events on their site and I have had a request for an

on the film Ghosts of Rwanda. For a small charity with
limited budget the admin fee was a useful investment."

this cross continental/global exchange.
I applaud your web site and your efforts to promote Black
History and the contributions that we
have made to the world. I look forward to further exploration

scary topic for some..."

"Black History Month this year played an important
part of the environment in which we work, by valuing the
history
of Black people and exploring the future available to all
of us. Without the help of Well Placed Consultancy I doubt
we could have achieved any where near the success that we
have. It is now important that we continue to build on the
relationships and look forward to even better Black History
Month 2006. If we haven’t been arrested for meeting
in the Railway Station car park first!"

it as it is, stating the case for Black History and its importance
in the curriculum as concisely
and directly as possible. She presented a wide range of
resource suggestions to support the case that the responsibility

enriching our curriculum all year round is within the capability
of all teachers and adults who work with children. Thank

positive feed from attendees. They said that they found the
event very inspirational and felt uplifted. They stated that

joining Croydon College to learn more about our history"
"Thank you very much for the lovely afternoon. I
thoroughly enjoyed myself, I felt very much part of it. I
went home so much happier than normal day. I felt part of
myself telling me I should get to do something for myself
like going back to studying. Also talked about the whole afternoon
to my grown up children"
"Thank you for organising this event. I found the talk
most informative and uplifting, the guest speakers were for
me out of this world in respect they have lived such interesting
lives and if it was not for this event I would not have had
the chance to meet them"
"Thanks for inviting me to the Home Office Black
History Month event just to say the presentations I saw were
interesting and I learnt lots. Mostly I enjoyed the presentation
by the "real" people who gave an account of their
contribution to Black British History. There should be more
presentations by "Real" people as it helps to keep
the equality message alive and means we are able to celebrate
their successes and see more clearly the work we need to do
to build on their achievements"
"I was glad that I attended and was in fact my first
ever attendance at a Black History Month event. I learned
a great deal and was educated!!! It also showed how little
I knew and gave me a different perspective. I will definitely
try and encourage others to attend the next event of this
type. I was impressed by the speakers - especially the fact
that they were alive and able to impart their knowledge and
wisdom of their own personal struggles - I thank them for
sharing (history is alive indeed!! And shaped by us all).
Mia was excellent and her energy and approach to getting the
audience to participate and socialise was original and refreshing.
Well done to everybody who contributed, organised and attended.
It was a great day and great was that day"
"I found the seminar both interesting and educational.
More than anything it gave me an awareness of contributions
made by people who are an inspiration, not just to Britain
but to Humanity. These seminars help nudge us from our daily
lives that we take for granted to remind us that without the
struggles and works of earlier people life would not have
been the same. In future I hope to see activities and involvement
of people of many other ethnic groups, although I understand
that we all need to take active part in seeking to achieve
this. May I congratulate the organisers and guests to the
seminar. It was organised and conducted very nicely where
everyone was friendly and welcoming"
"I enjoyed it very much especially the speaker on black
Londoners and the couple describing their alternative black
publishing company. Also those responsible for the display
panels are to be congratulated on an excellent job"
